Today I finally managed to take out the problematic oil pressure switch. This combination of tools did the trick. The crowfoot spanner was essential but it still wasn’t easy to find a suitable combination. Today I finally found a tool store that was selling those.
But then there are the bad news. The switch works. I tested it with a bicycle tire pump. So that means that my oil pump is likely the culprit.
Before opening the engine I’m going to add a pressure sensor to the oil filter housing and crank the engine (with the ECU fuse removed) and see what happens.

That’s a little worrisome, but would also be very surprising. BMW big six oil pumps are not known to be weak.

Don’t tell that to the E46 crowd...

They don’t have a tendency to break completely but the relief valve pistons do get stuck sometimes. They have too sharp corners and this causes them to get stuck in the open position.
The pumps are now ridiculously expensive so there has to be some reason for that...

Different engine family, but I own one of those and work on many, many more, also not a common failure unless they’re starved. Power steering pumps, on the other hand...

Reason 1: It’s an S38 part. Reason 2: they don’t sell many of them.

The pump is also shared by M30B30 and M30B35 (530i, 535i, 730i etc) so it shouldn’t be very rare part. It’s a bit weird that M5s didn’t get a special oil pump even though they upgraded nearly everything from the base M30 to make the S38.

What’s the problem you are trying to fix?

Missing oil pressure.

How do you know?

That pressure switch lits the warning light. I was hoping that it would be broken and giving a false warning. Now that I know that sensor isn’t dead there has to be a bigger issue.
In yesterday I cranked the engine with the oil canister open and there was oil coming in. So the pump still does something. Now I need to add a pressure sensor to see if it’s pushing out any pressure.

Does the oil light come on right when you start the car or after it warms up? And oil pressure is usually measured at the oil pressure switch hole

The light just lit up on one morning. I didn’t have any issues before. The pressure regulating piston might have gotten stuck. It’s a semi common problem with S38 and M30 engines.
I made an adapter today to measure the pressure but I didn’t have time to mount or test it.
